It is no secret that three-time defending English Premier League champions Manchester City rely heavily on their striker sensation from Norway Erling Haaland to deliver the goals since his arrival at the club during the summer of the 2022/2023 Season. Indeed, the prolific forward delivered his career best season for his new club in 2022/2023 with 52 goals in 53 games, leading Manchester City to a second ever continental treble by an English club in the history of football. During last night’s game against Luton Town, Manchester City were without Haaland, but they managed to earn a hard fought come-from-behind victory against the home team.
Manchester City Came Back From 1-0 Down to Beat Luton Town 2-1
The Haaland-less Manchester City were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half, and were punished by Luton Town in the final moments of the opening 45 minutes at Kenilworth Road. Former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley dispossessed a Manchester City player and gave the ball away to Alfie Doughty, who then passed it to Andros Townsend. The 32-year-old ex-Spurs player delivered a perfect cross for his teammate Elijah Adebayo to put the hosts 1-0 up just before the half-time whistle.
The visitors were forced to find themselves back into the game, and to their head coach Pep Guardiola’s credit during their half-time talk, City scored a couple of goals in quick succession after the hour mark. Spanish midfielder Rodri won his battle against Barkley around the right wing at Luton’s own half, before he bumped into Tom Lockyer in the penalty box. The ball fell just nice for Bernardo Silva, who did not hesitate to curl a left-footed strike into the bottom left corner. Thomas Kaminski was caught off guard and was not given sufficient to react to the Portuguese’s effort.
Manchester City’s winning goal in this Matchday 16 fixture in the Premier League came less than 180 seconds later than their equaliser, and Jack Grealish was the man who delivered. Amari’i Bell’s poor pass was intercepted by Julián Álvarez, who seemingly contacted the ball with his left arm, and Phil Foden picked up the ball to feed the 2022 FIFA World-Cup winning forward. Álvarez would charge towards the dangerous zone, followed by a ground delivery that missed everyone but Grealish. The England slid in a shot to the far post as a result.

Manchester City Earned First Win in Five EPL Matches
Grealish’s second goal in 16 appearances in all competitions in 2023/2024 gave Manchester City their much needed first win in five games in the English Premier League, having drawn thrice against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur as well as lost to Aston Villa. The 2-1 victory also gave Guardiola’s side their tenth win of the season, trailing leaders Liverpool, second-placed Arsenal and third-placed Villa by 4, 3, and 2 points respectively.
Manchester City will next travel to Red Star Stadium and face Red Star Belgrade for the final game in this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. With Pep’s men already qualified for the next round of the competition, one would imagine the Spanish management maestro to put on a weakened lineup and focus on the team’s following league fixture versus Crystal Palace at Etihad.
Another team who also ended their embarrassing winless run in the Premier League were Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs demolished Newcastle United 4-1 at home, putting an end to their five-game winless streak with that emphatic victory. (Click here for the full match details of the Spurs-Newcastle game.)
